Windows Phone 8: Microsoft ups support to 36 months

Microsoft has revealed that it’s set to double the length of time it supports Windows Phone devices.
Ballmer and co will now ensure updates are rolled out to devices that are 36- months old, starting with the current batch of Windows Phone 8 devices.
The move comes as rival Google is struggling to ensure that manufacturers using its Android OS serve up timely updates to customers.
HTC recently revealed it would not to be giving users of the year-old HTC One S an update to the latest edition of Android.
In an official blog post, Microsoft said: “Beginning with Windows Phone 8 we’ll make updates, including security updates, available for 36 months.
"These updates will be incremental, with each update built on the update that preceded it.
“The mobile operator or phone manufacturer may control the distribution of these incremental updates and update availability may also vary by country, region, and device hardware capabilities.”
That last line is important, as it suggests some mobile-makers may take some time to serve up updates.
But with Windows Phone lacking any custom skins and proprietary changes, customers should expect to get software bumps quicker than most Android users.
