Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 to land at CES, hints official blog

samsung galaxy gear review 3 Tech-site chatter that a sequel to the Galaxy Gear could land from Samsung at this month’s CES tech expo looks a bit more credible today, after the gadget-maker’s official blog dropped some heavy hints about its plans for the event.
In a heads-up post about CES to the Samsung faithful, the phone-maker initially alludes to the Galaxy Gear smartwatch’s arrival at IFA in Berlin late last year.

Samsung Galaxy S5 metal build confirmed by Vice President?

Rumours that Samsung will opt for a premium metal build for the Galaxy S5 looked a smidgeon more nailed-on today, with the news that the company’s Vice President has been spilling the beans about its plans at what sounds like a boozy soiree.
A report in the Korean press claims that Dong-hoon Chang, Samsung’s Vice President and Head of Design Strategy, revealed (almost) all at a New Year’s Eve party at Seoul’s Shilla Hotel.
Samsung Galaxy S5 mock-up
According to the site, Dong-hoon told the great and good assembled that the Galaxy S5 will indeed be made out of “new material”. That chimes with long-standing rumours that the next-gen Galaxy S smartphone will ditch the range’s plastic construction for a metal frame.

Samsung Galaxy S5 concept packs flexible screen and aluminium unibody

samsung galaxy s5 concept 1 The next flagship Galaxy S smartphone will be a radical break with form. Or at least it will be if the Samsung-fixated sorts at galaxys5info.com have anything to do with it.
A designer at the site has worked up a concept phone packing the flexible screen technology that’s been earmarked for Samsung phones for what feels like ages. But which has been omitted so far, presumably because it’s not market-ready yet.

Samsung Galaxy S3 gets Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Galaxy Gear support

Samsung Galaxy S3 hands-on (generic)
Samsung has made Android 4.3, aka Jelly Bean, available for UK editions of the Galaxy S3, bringing some swell new features to the smartphone as well as support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
The software is available to download over the air now for Galaxy S3 owners who bought their handsets off-contract. To get it, just head to 'Settings' and select ‘More’. Done that? Good. Then go to ‘About device’ and choose ‘Software update’ to start the download.
If you got your phone via a monthly contract, you’ll have to wait until your carrier approves the update. That's having first ensured it plays nice with whatever bloatware and services they’ve stealthily dumped on your Galaxy S3.

Samsung Galaxy Round to be first flexible phone?

The name of the first-ever flexible screen-toting smartphone might just have leaked online, ahead of its debut later this month.
According to sources cited by South Korean site Asiae, Samsung will opt for the name 'Galaxy Round', which we’re guessing alludes to the curved effect of the display.

The report, which puts the phone's asking price at $900, also claims that it's spec sheet will closely resemble the Galaxy Note 3 and that it will be made in very limited quantities.
This chimes with earlier leaks that claimed this was down to low production yields for the screen tech, as well as Samsung's wariness of overcommitting to technology that has yet to be properly tested with the public.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 bundled with free Galaxy Gear smartwatch

samsung galaxy gear review 3
One of the UK’s largest retailers is offering Samsung’s debut smartwatch for free when customers shell out for the Galaxy Note 3, amid reports that consumers’ response to the smartphone peripheral is more than a little disappointing.
Under the terms of Phones 4U’s offer, gadget-fanciers who buy the Note 3 on a two-year monthly contract at £42.99 per month before Thursday (that’s November 14th, date fans) qualify for a free Samsung Galaxy Gear.
Depending on where you do your gadget-shopping, the smartwatch is normally priced between £240 and £299 or so.
Alternatively, you can pick up Note 3 for £39.99 per month and shell out £99.99 upfront for the Gear. [Affects voiceover voice] ‘It really is up to you’.
Phones 4U’s promotion comes after evidence that the Gear was being returned by a frightening one out of three customers at Best Buy stores in the US, for reasons that have yet to be fully determined.

Samsung Galaxy Gear: New screens confirm specs

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear is all set for its official unveiling on September 4th. But the chaps at @evleaks are still unearthing the goods about Sammy’s forthcoming new smart watch, this time revealing screen shots of the device’s smartphone control app.
The pair of screens confirm a string of info which has already leaked about the timepiece. NFC is mentioned, with a diagram showing a Samsung phone and a Galaxy Gear pairing via touch.
Samsung Galaxy Gear app leak
A ‘My Apps’ tab supports rumours that the Galaxy Gear will have its own suite of dedicated add-ons. And, interestingly, there’s a ‘Find My Watch’ function mentioned too.
How this works is as yet unclear, but we’d be willing to bet it could be a potential flashpoint with Apple, whose ‘Find My iPhone’ feature is hugely popular.

Samsung Galaxy Gear photos leak, fitness monitor highlighted

samsung galaxy gear prototype 2 Images purportedly showing a prototype of the soon-to-land Samsung Galaxy Gear have leaked online, ahead of the device’s launch tomorrow.
Sourced by VentureBeat, the work-in-progress smartwatch appears to blend industrial design aesthetics with the, um, practical, unshowy looks of Garmin’s sportswatches and packs a whopping three-inch screen that has seen it termed unappealingly bulky in some quarters.
But while it’s indisputably not much of a looker, it may yet emerge that what we’re looking at is unrecognisable from the finished product. That's certainly been the case with Samsung Galaxy smartphone prototypes, with the square-looking test models bearing little resemblance to the curved kits that eventually emerged into the spotlight at launch.

Samsung Galaxy Gear colour options revealed, on sale late September

The Samsung Galaxy Gear will come in a suite of colourways, it has emerged, as details of the smartwatch seep out with weeks to go before it makes its anticipated debut in Berlin.
Sam Mobile, citing an insider who’d understandably prefer to remain anonymous, today reports that the Galaxy Gear will come in white, orange, grey and black and will start shipping the week commencing September 23rd.
samsung galaxy gear concept black
A white and gold variant will apparently ship a week later and is tipped to be exclusive to some regions and/or networks.
The device's retail date is set to be around late-September or early-October, with Samsung purportedly open to releasing more colour options in future.
Colour-scheme details for the Gear come hard on the heels of yesterday’s spec-sheet leak that gave us some idea of what we can expect under the bonnet.
Alongside a 2.5-inch screen, the smartwatch is expected to pack a dual-core processor, the S-Health fitness monitoring app and the same eyeball-tracking technology as the Galaxy S4.
It’s also set to feature NFC support for contactless payments and transferring content when bumped against other NFC-enabled kit and will connect and pair with users’ smartphones via Bluetooth 4.0.
What it won’t do is make or take calls, disappointing anyone holding out hope of acting out their Dick Tracy watchphone fantasies.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3: new components leaked

Gossip about Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy Note 3 has gone quiet in the past couple of weeks. But the all-new phablet has burst back into the headlines this morning, after a screen component was snapped by mobile leakster Sonny Dickson.
Dickson says he snagged the images from ‘a trusted source in China’. They appear to show a brushed metal design, with the usual Samsung branding and home button placed at the bottom of the device.
The images add little to what we already know about the spec sheet. The screen is believed to measure 5.7-inches. However, they do clearly suggest the bezel has been shaved down, with other reports claiming it’ll come in at just 2.2mm.
Other Galaxy Note 3 features are believed to include a 13 megapixel snapper and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Samsung Galaxy Gear: render imagines smartwatch based on leaked patent

A 3D designer has given us some insight into how the Samsung Galaxy Gear might look, after working up a ‘what-if’ render based on a leaked Samsung patent for a smartwatch.
Created for the discount site Voucher Codes Pro, the designers’ handsome imagining of the Gear includes a flexible screen of the sort that Samsung is known to have been investigating for some time.

The clasp of the tech giant’s foray into wearable tech features 'home' and 'back' buttons of the kind that grace every Android smartphone.
How much this will look like this finished article is anyone’s guess. But we know we’re fans of this particular render. And it also looks like we won’t have too much longer to find out how close the site has come to the real thing.
Samsung is now expected to drop the Galaxy Gear in early September at the same press event at Berlin’s IFA trade show that will also mark the launch of the Galaxy Note 3.

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 primed for Android 4.3

Samsung’s 2012 flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, are both set to make the jump directly to Android 4.3, bypassing Android 4.2 in the process.
The news comes via Deutsche Telekom, with a rep on its customer forum telling users that the Galaxy S3 would be making the move to Google’s latest version of Android.

Recent rumours have also suggested that the Note 2, which is set to be superseded by the Note 3 next month, will also be getting the same treatment.
The Galaxy S3 currently uses Android version 4.1.2. While the update won’t revolutionise the device, it will keep hardcore Google fanatics happy.
Samsung appears to be getting better at updating its older devices to newer software, with the Galaxy S2 also getting Android Jelly Bean.
This is in contrast to rival manufacturers, including HTC, which have struggled to roll out new versions of Google’s OS.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to drop in four variants?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be up grabs in four subtly different variants and at a range of price points, reports suggest, in a what seems like a further sign that the phone-maker is hell-bent on confusing consumers.
Keen smartphone industry-watchers will know that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 phone is now available in a host of different flavours, which are aimed at different demographics.
samsung galaxy note 3 prototype 2
Among them is the camera-focussed Galaxy S4 Zoom, the eminently pocketable Galaxy S4 Mini, the sporty Galaxy S4 Active and the original Galaxy S4.
Apparently not content with diluting the strength of the Galaxy S brand, today it seems like Samsung could be trying a similar approach with its Galaxy Note phablet brand.
According to Phandroid, which sourced story from a Korean news site, the top-of-the-range Galaxy Note 3 will come with a flexible screen – something that’s been a fixture of the Samsung rumour mill for years – and pack a 13-megapixel camera.
It will also be made from premium materials (think: aluminium and glass) of the sort that made the HTC One X stand out among rival Android devices.
The Android fan site claims that the flexi screen will be fashioned from “unspecified plastic material” and that the flexible display will be able to “absorb more energy from any impacts, preventing cracks or chips from appearing if your smartphone is dropped or bashed.”
samsung galaxy note 3 proto compare
The second-tier Note 3 will swap the plastic, bendable screen for a standard glass one and feature a plastic construction, while retaining its high-end stablemate’s 13-megapixel snapper.
Choose either of the low-cost options (both of which feature plastic shells) and you’ll get LCD screens, with the third-tier variant rocking a 13-megapixel camera and the bottom-end model furnished with an eight-megapixel camera. At least one of these is thought to be aimed at adventure sports-fanciers.
All four options will feature a 5.7-inch screen and the same quad-core processor, it’s claimed.
Samsung’s apparent decision to test the waters with a Galaxy Note 3 with superior build quality comes after some tech-press sages criticised the Galaxy S3 for its less-than-solid construction compared with the iPhone and HTC’s One X.
The gadget-maker is expected to unveil the Note, or Note(s), in September at the IFA technology pow-wow in Berlin.

Her complaint follows similar cases involving combusting Galaxy S3 phones from earlier this year.
Samsung has acknowledged the problem, which it’s thought related to phone’s battery, and has promised to carry out an investigation.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to launch September 4th, says source

Samsung logo at booth Details of the impending arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 have emerged online, after an individual 'familiar with matters' at Samsung let slip information about the phone-maker’s plans.
According to a source cited Android Geeks, the phablet will be unveiled at a special “press-only” Samsung Unpacked event on September 4th at the IFA 2013 expo in Berlin.
While rumours that long suggested that the show would be marked by the arrival of the Note 3, the report marks the first time that any sort of tentative day has been advanced in the tech press for the phone’s debut.
September is also the month mooted for the arrival of the iPhone 5S / iPhone 6, setting up what’s sure to be a smartphone showdown in the final quarter of 2013 and birthing a host of Samsung advertisements taking now-familiar sideswipes at its rival.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition photographed running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

android 4.3 jelly bean Photos of the next version of Android running on the vanilla edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 have cropped up online, adding weight to reports that the freshly baked software will land on the just-released handset next month.
Brought to the tech world’s attention by Sam Mobile, the images show an ‘About Phone’ screen which names the Galaxy S4 Google Edition by its official model number and indicates that it is powered by the yet-to-be-released 4.3 version of Android.
The Jelly Bean logo that's clearly on show in the photos also appears to confirm that the new software will be an iterative take on the current 4.2 version of Android.
That means it definitely won’t be a major overhaul of the platform that's seemingly set to arrive with the mooted Key Lime Pie edition (aka Android 5.0) of Google’s OS.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition due update to Android 4.3 in July?

Buyers of the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be the first to get their hands on the forthcoming, unseen 4.3 version of Android, rumours suggest, once again highlighting one of the chief reasons to buy a vanilla Android phone.
According to sources cited by Sam Mobile, the software update for the phone, which only went on sale at Google Play in the US this week and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, will land next month.
samsung galaxy s4 google edition official
The 4.3 iteration of Android is another take on Jelly Bean. This much we think we know. But while that means it won’t be a major overhaul (that’ll surely come with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie), we’re still anticipating that it’ll bring with it a fair old tranche of new features.
Aimed principally at developers, the Galaxy S4 Google edition features Android as the search giant originally intended. That means it’s free of Samsung’s customisations, such as the Smart Pause intelligent pause mode, which some tech fans feel are overly fussy and gimmicky.

Among the host of goodies its packs is Google Now, which is a Siri-style voice-guided assistant, and all the optimisations of Project Butter, which promises a smoother, faster user experience.
Also new are several Samsung exclusive features such as Smart Stay, Smart Alert, Pop-up Play and Direct Call, plus an-new version of the TouchWiz Nature UX interface that’s cleaner and easier to navigate and adds customisable toggles to the notification area.
