Sony Xperia Z1: Official Honami name revealed

Sony’s much-touted Honami handset will be officially dubbed the Xperia Z1 when it’s unleashed at a press event on September 4th.
That’s according to an XDA developers forum member, who claims to have the inside line on the device.

The new phone, which has appeared in a series of newly leaked press renders, is said to rock a 5-inch display, with Full HD smarts, as well as 2GB of RAM and Qualcomm’s now-ubiquitous Snapdragon 800 processor.
What’s more, it’s expected to supersede Sony’s Xperia Z, which was first revealed back in January of this year.
The camera is also set to wow users, with a 20.7-megapixel sensor. That should put it right up against Nokia’s new Lumia 1020 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Zoom.

Sony teases Xperia Z1 on Twitter

After a whole heap of rumours, Sony itself has begun teasing its forthcoming Xperia Z1. The company has taken to Twitter, posting a cropped image of the device, with the missive, “It’s the smartphone everyone’s been talking about…Not long now #bestofSony.”
While the Xperia Z1 has undoubtedly been the subject of intense gossip, Sony’s pushing it somewhat to say it’s the phone everyone’s been talking about. That title falls to Apple’s forthcoming iPhones, surely.

That said, the Z1 certainly promises to mix things up. A step up from January’s Xperia Z, it’s said to rock a Full HD 5-inch display, 2GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
The big news, though, will doubtless be the handset’s 20.7-megapixel camera. Sony will be desperate to wrest back the initiative from Nokia’s new Lumia 1020 and reassert itself as the premium camera phone brand.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra a worthy competitor for Samsung Galaxy Note, says poll

Samsung might not have things all its own way in the phablet market for much longer, a poll suggests, as the Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra becomes the latest device from the reborn phone-maker to turn tech-fans’ heads.
With combined lifetime sales of 30 million, the S-PEN stylus-toting Note range pretty much invented the market for smartphone-tablet hybrids. And until now, it’s a segment that Samsung has largely had to itself.

However, that might be about to change with the arrival of the Xperia Z Ultra. In a poll of 1,436 uSwitch Tech readers, 60 per cent said they considered the Z Ultra, which also packs stylus support, to be a viable challenger to the Note range.
Signs that the Z Ultra will get a warm reception when it drops in September come after Sony recently posted its first annual profit for five years, as the venerable tech and entertainment giant begins to climb out of the torpor it found itself in when bound to former-partner Ericsson.

The phone-maker’s change of fortunes was spurred by strong sales for the Xperia Z, which was also Sony’s best reviewed smartphone in recent memory.
Unlike the Note range, Sony’s effort allows buyers to use any kind of pen or pencil as a stylus. With its 6.4-inch Full HD display, the Xperia Z Ultra is also substantially larger than other devices marketed as phablets, packs an eight-megapixel camera and is waterproof.

Sony Xperia smartwatch to be unveiled tomorrow?

sony xperia smartphone mock up Sony could be about to gazump Apple with an Xperia-branded smartwatch, a press invite to a launch event suggets.
The invitation for the showcase, which happens tomorrow at the none-more-swanky Bulgari hotel, trails what we're assured will be the "next breakthrough in the Sony design story". We're also promised hands-on time with whatever the gadget-maker unveils.
Although there's no mention of a smartwatch, the intimation that design will be the focus of the event, coupled with the fact that it's all been kept fairly low-key, suggests it's probably an accessory/peripheral rather than a new smartphone that's set for the big reveal.
We're certainly nominating a smartwatch to fill the hole, after a series of tweets last week from Sony's official Xperia account that alluded to the gadget-maker's long-time pedigree with wearable tech, in the form of the Walkman.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra coming to Three, Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u

Sony’s freshly announced Xperia Z Ultra will be available on Three when it hits shop shelves this Q3, the network has confirmed.
Three announced via a blog post that the Z Ultra (or ZU for short) will be ‘coming soon’ to its ‘UltraFast’ network - becoming the first and only UK network to confirm plans to range the handset since its official unveiling yesterday.

Alas, Three didn’t provide any specifics as to when the when the Z Ultra will be actually available, nor any details on pricing. Hopefully these will be revealed closer to launch, along with the option to pre-order the device on the carrier’s popular pay-monthly tariffs.
Following on Three’s footsteps, Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4u and Dialaphone have also put up ‘Coming Soon’ pages for the Z Ultra, with Carphone expecting to have stock in September.
Billed as the world’s largest and slimmest full HD smartphone, the Xperia Z Ultra is home to a 6.4-inch ‘Triluminous’ display with Sony’s latest ‘X-Reality’ technology that fixes and replaces broken pixels in videos in real-time and can register inputs from a stylus or even a pencil or pen, making it a bona fide contender to the Samsung Galaxy Note.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra official announced – world’s largest and thinnest full HD waterproof smartphone

Sony has officially raised the curtain on the Xperia Z Ultra, the latest addition to the Xperia family that’s set to take on Samsung and Apple at the smartphone summit.
Announced today at an intimate press gathering at the Blvgari Hotel in London, the Xperia Z Ultra – or the ZU as it’s also known – is home to a 6.4-inch full HD ‘Triluminous’ display featuring Sony’s latest ‘X-Reality’ video processing technology that fixes and replaces missing pixels in the picture on the fly to offer a silky smooth viewing experience.

This is made better by the screen’s ability to recognise inputs from stylus or even a pen or pencil, making it a direct challenger to Samsung’s hugely successful Galaxy Note range.
Powering the Z Ultra is Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz, which numerous benchmark tests have already proven to be faster than any smartphone currently in the market.
At the back of the ZU sits an eight-megapixel Exmor RS camera with HDR support for both photos and videos. This is teamed with a front-facing two-megapixel camera for video calling in HD.
On the connectivity front, there’s also NFC support with one-touch functions for instant connecting to other NFC-enabled devices such as speakers or televisions. Also on board is a magnetic charging port that will allow the device to be charged with a compatible charging dock or cradle without needing a special back cover.
