Apple trims price of iPad Air and iPad Mini for Black Friday

Apple has cut the price of its flagship iPad and first-generation micro tablet for 24 hours, as the buying bonanza-cum-newly-minted-Xmas-tradition that is Black Friday gets underway.
Buy an iPad Air from the Apple Store today and you’ll qualify for a £31 discount on the 16GB model in its Wi-Fi-only and 3G flavours, bringing the asking price down to £368. Reductions on the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models are £41, £51 and £61 respectively.

Disappointingly, there’s no discount on the iPad 2, aka the slate that Apple’s diktats insist we refer to as the ‘iPad mini with Retina Display.

Android exec Hugo Barra quits for Chinese mobile maker

android toy 2 One of Android’s leading execs has quit his post and is heading to China to work for one of the country’s mobile manufacturers. Hugo Barra, Android’s vice-president of product management who has worked at Google for five and a half years, is set to join Xiaomi, working on developing their Android portfolio.
In a post on Google+, Barra said, “In a few weeks, I'll be joining the Xiaomi team in China to help them expand their incredible product portfolio and business globally — as Vice President, Xiaomi Global.
“I'm really looking forward to this new challenge, and am particularly excited about the opportunity to continue to help drive the Android ecosystem.”
Barra’s departure follows that of Andy Rubin, Android’s creator, who left the Android team to work on other Google projects.

Steve Wozniak dismisses Apple critics

Steve Wozniak (news banner) Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has said the company’s critics have got to understand that the company can’t release revolutionary kit year after year.
In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC, Wozniak said, “Everybody says, ‘oh my gosh, two years have passed and we need something really new and great from Apple’.” Well yeah, great advances for mankind don't happen every year.”
Launching a staunch defence of Tim Cook’s tenure as Apple CEO, Wozniak said the current boss was hand-picked for the role by his predecessor. “Steve Jobs had very strong feelings about what makes a company great, what makes products great. He more-or-less chose Tim Cook to be in that role, in that position.”
Wozniak also said he welcomed the challenge from Samsung, saying the Korean giant was able to lead thanks to its penetration in markets where Apple had no presence until just a few years ago.
He also suggested that Steve Ballmer’s time at Microsoft had not gone as well as Bill Gates’s, saying the Big M was losing its value and that it was resting on its laurels.

Amazon and Apple call a truce in app store battle

Apple iPhone App Store Amazon and Apple have brought an end to two years of legal wrangling over the term ‘app store’.
The internecine lawsuit has been abandoned by both parties after talks.
Apple had been suing Amazon after the online retailer launched its own, Android-based ‘appstore’ in 2011.
Steve Jobs argued at the time that the move was a deliberate attempt to trade on the name of Apple’s App Store.
However, it appears Apple has had a change of heart. An Amazon lawyer, Martin Glick, told Reuters that “…this was a decision by Apple to unilaterally abandon the case, and leave Amazon free to use 'appstore’”.
The shift in position comes only weeks after the battle looked likely to rage in court for months to come.
Hopefully this dovish approach now means Apple can bring an end to its never-ending tussle with Samsung. Although, we wouldn’t bet on it.
