Samsung backing wrong horse with flexible Galaxy phone, suggests survey

Punters won’t bend to whims of phone-maker, it seems.

Samsung may want to reconsider pinning its hopes on flexible phones or reserve the tech for devices other than its flagship handsets, after a study revealed strong levels of antipathy towards the nascent technology among punters.
After years of speculation, the handset-maker brought the first-ever curved screen smartphone to market earlier this year in the form of the Galaxy Round.

Samsung, which has shown off bendy smartphone prototypes at trade shows for some time now, is expected to make good on its tentative foray into the flexi-phone market by following up the Round with a bendable smartphone later this year.

Samsung Galaxy Round to be first flexible phone?

The name of the first-ever flexible screen-toting smartphone might just have leaked online, ahead of its debut later this month.
According to sources cited by South Korean site Asiae, Samsung will opt for the name 'Galaxy Round', which we’re guessing alludes to the curved effect of the display.

The report, which puts the phone's asking price at $900, also claims that it's spec sheet will closely resemble the Galaxy Note 3 and that it will be made in very limited quantities.
This chimes with earlier leaks that claimed this was down to low production yields for the screen tech, as well as Samsung's wariness of overcommitting to technology that has yet to be properly tested with the public.

Wozniak’s note of caution is a rare slice of common sense

The pace at which the world of smartphones and tablets moves today means that the demands from hardcore fans, hungry for bleeding edge updates, are relentless. If a new phone doesn’t cram in a game-changing feature, then it’s instantly dismissed as irrelevant, despite the fact its software may be spanking new and a game-changer in and of itself.
That’s why this week’s words from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak are so refreshing. In an interview with the BBC, Wozniak essentially put demanding fans in their place. “Everybody says, ‘oh my gosh, two years have passed and we need something really new and great from Apple’,” he said. “Well yeah, great advances for mankind don't happen every year.”
Wozniak was answering a question about whether Apple had lost its innovative edge since Tim Cook took over the helm at Cupertino. But his remarks are telling and show how ludicrous things have got that a wholly rejigged iPhone 5S, albeit with a similar design, is dismissed outright as iterative and unexciting in some quarters.
In the past seven years, Apple has released two products that have completely reshaped tech as we know it. The iPhone and iPad were both trailblazers and updates to those devices are only ever going to offer a minor jump on the last year’s model. Cumulatively, that can add up to a huge difference, as is being seen with the move to iOS 7 and a bulging App Store, full of stunning native and third party add-ons.

Samsung Galaxy Gear photos leak, fitness monitor highlighted

Images purportedly showing a prototype of the soon-to-land Samsung Galaxy Gear have leaked online, ahead of the device’s launch tomorrow.
Sourced by VentureBeat, the work-in-progress smartwatch appears to blend industrial design aesthetics with the, um, practical, unshowy looks of Garmin’s sportswatches and packs a whopping three-inch screen that has seen it termed unappealingly bulky in some quarters.
But while it’s indisputably not much of a looker, it may yet emerge that what we’re looking at is unrecognisable from the finished product. That's certainly been the case with Samsung Galaxy smartphone prototypes, with the square-looking test models bearing little resemblance to the curved kits that eventually emerged into the spotlight at launch.

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 primed for Android 4.3

Samsung’s 2012 flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, are both set to make the jump directly to Android 4.3, bypassing Android 4.2 in the process.
The news comes via Deutsche Telekom, with a rep on its customer forum telling users that the Galaxy S3 would be making the move to Google’s latest version of Android.

Recent rumours have also suggested that the Note 2, which is set to be superseded by the Note 3 next month, will also be getting the same treatment.
The Galaxy S3 currently uses Android version 4.1.2. While the update won’t revolutionise the device, it will keep hardcore Google fanatics happy.
Samsung appears to be getting better at updating its older devices to newer software, with the Galaxy S2 also getting Android Jelly Bean.
This is in contrast to rival manufacturers, including HTC, which have struggled to roll out new versions of Google’s OS.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to drop in four variants?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will be up grabs in four subtly different variants and at a range of price points, reports suggest, in a what seems like a further sign that the phone-maker is hell-bent on confusing consumers.
Keen smartphone industry-watchers will know that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 phone is now available in a host of different flavours, which are aimed at different demographics.

Among them is the camera-focussed Galaxy S4 Zoom, the eminently pocketable Galaxy S4 Mini, the sporty Galaxy S4 Active and the original Galaxy S4.
Apparently not content with diluting the strength of the Galaxy S brand, today it seems like Samsung could be trying a similar approach with its Galaxy Note phablet brand.
According to Phandroid, which sourced story from a Korean news site, the top-of-the-range Galaxy Note 3 will come with a flexible screen – something that’s been a fixture of the Samsung rumour mill for years – and pack a 13-megapixel camera.
It will also be made from premium materials (think: aluminium and glass) of the sort that made the HTC One X stand out among rival Android devices.
The Android fan site claims that the flexi screen will be fashioned from “unspecified plastic material” and that the flexible display will be able to “absorb more energy from any impacts, preventing cracks or chips from appearing if your smartphone is dropped or bashed.”

The second-tier Note 3 will swap the plastic, bendable screen for a standard glass one and feature a plastic construction, while retaining its high-end stablemate’s 13-megapixel snapper.
Choose either of the low-cost options (both of which feature plastic shells) and you’ll get LCD screens, with the third-tier variant rocking a 13-megapixel camera and the bottom-end model furnished with an eight-megapixel camera. At least one of these is thought to be aimed at adventure sports-fanciers.
All four options will feature a 5.7-inch screen and the same quad-core processor, it’s claimed.
Samsung’s apparent decision to test the waters with a Galaxy Note 3 with superior build quality comes after some tech-press sages criticised the Galaxy S3 for its less-than-solid construction compared with the iPhone and HTC’s One X.
The gadget-maker is expected to unveil the Note, or Note(s), in September at the IFA technology pow-wow in Berlin.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is today implicated in another one of those ‘exploding smartphone' stories, joining pretty much every generation of iPhone and earlier Galaxy S handsets in a fast-expanding club.
Today’s report comes from Swiss teenager Fanny Schlatter, who claims to have suffered third-degree burns after the Samsung Galaxy S3 exploded in her trouser pocket.

According to French-language newspaper Le Matin, Fanny was alerted to the situation by a loud bang and within seconds was fighting off shoulder-high flames from her combusting smartphone. Dramatic, no?
The 18-year-old, who claims that she now has no feeling in her thigh and said she smelled like a “burnt pig” during the accident, has announced plans to pursue legal action against Samsung.
Her complaint follows similar cases involving combusting Galaxy S3 phones from earlier this year.
Samsung has acknowledged the problem, which it’s thought related to phone’s battery, and has promised to carry out an investigation.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini has finally landed in the UK, now available on every major network in the land on a host of pay-monthly tariffs.
The smaller, cheaper and arguably cuter sibling to Samsung’s latest flagship is currently up for grabs for free on contract deals from Three, Orange, T-Mobile, EE, O2 and Vodafone.

On Three, the S4 Mini is free to snap up from £26 per month on the Ultimate Internet 100 tariff, with allowances including all-you-can-eat data, 100 minutes and 5,000 texts.
Orange and T-Mobile are also offering the handset gratis from £26 a month. Pick Orange’s Dolphin 26 plan and you’ll receive 200 minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB of data, while T-Mobile customers will be entitled to 300 minutes, 500 texts and 1000MB internet.
The S4 Mini is also free on EE’s 4G price plans from £31 per month, which comes with unlimited calls, texts and 500MB of data.
Choose O2 or Vodafone and you’re looking at a steeper outlay of £33 and £37 a month respectively for a free handset.
Vodafone subscribers will be furnished with 600 minutes, 500MB data and unlimited texts. O2, meanwhile, is offering 600 minutes, unlimited texts and 750MB data.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google edition photographed running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

Photos of the next version of Android running on the vanilla edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 have cropped up online, adding weight to reports that the freshly baked software will land on the just-released handset next month.
Brought to the tech world’s attention by Sam Mobile, the images show an ‘About Phone’ screen which names the Galaxy S4 Google Edition by its official model number and indicates that it is powered by the yet-to-be-released 4.3 version of Android.
The Jelly Bean logo that's clearly on show in the photos also appears to confirm that the new software will be an iterative take on the current 4.2 version of Android.
That means it definitely won’t be a major overhaul of the platform that's seemingly set to arrive with the mooted Key Lime Pie edition (aka Android 5.0) of Google’s OS.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 Android Jelly Bean update brings Google Now, improved interface and more

Samsung has begun rolling out Android Jelly Bean to the Galaxy Ace 2, bringing an array of new features and enhancements to the much-loved mid-range kit.
Android version 4.1.2 is currently available to Ace 2 owners as an over-the-air update or to download over Samsung Kies. Among the host of goodies its packs is Google Now, which is a Siri-style voice-guided assistant, and all the optimisations of Project Butter, which promises a smoother, faster user experience.
Also new are several Samsung exclusive features such as Smart Stay, Smart Alert, Pop-up Play and Direct Call, plus an-new version of the TouchWiz Nature UX interface that’s cleaner and easier to navigate and adds customisable toggles to the notification area.
Samsung has yet to confirm if or when the UK and rest of Europe will be joining our German friends in the rollout. Rest assured, as soon as we find out, you’ll be among the first to know.

A blurrycam snap purporting to show Samsung’s next Galaxy Note handset has cropped up online, months ahead of its mooted due date in September.
Sourced by Chinese site MyDrivers, the image shows a handset with expansive dimensions that appear to corroborate long-standing chatter that the Galaxy Note 3 will pack a 5.9-inch or six-inch display.
