EE doubles 4G smartphone speeds in 12 cities, launches shared plans
Super-fast network presses home first-mover advantage.
EE customers in 12 cities will from tomorrow be able to access 4G
mobile broadband speeds double those currently available, as the UK's
sole 4G carrier bids to sweeten its appeal ahead of the arrival of
rivals' next-gen networks later this year.
EE customers in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield will be able to enjoy average, real-world connection speeds of between 24Mbps and 30Mbps and a headline, theoretical speed of 150Mbps.
Existing EE subscribers will be upgraded to the faster connections, which promise improved streaming for HD video and more practical tethering multiple devices and sharing high-res photos, for free. They will also remain on their current plan, with allowances unaffected.
Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE, said: “Last year we launched the first superfast 4G and fibre broadband network in the UK. Now we’re staying one step ahead with the launch of double speed 4G and a range of new innovative plans and services – designed to transform the way our customers connect and share content.
“Our new double speed 4G technology means that we have the biggest, fastest and best network in the UK, and now the equal fastest in the world.
"With our superfast network, we have a unique opportunity to introduce a new era of customer-friendly pricing models based on speed, and we’ll be revealing further details of this later this year.”
The carrier also announced the launch of Shared 4G plans, which allow families and couples to share usage allowances between up to five devices and four users and receive a single bill.
Under the terms of the shared plans, a 'lead user' is nominated who will sign up for a contract with EE, with unlimited calls and texts and a maximum data allowance of up to 20GB.
Further users can then join the plan for an additional charge to share the allowances. The monthly charge varies, with 4G capable smartphone customers able to join for £22 per month, while tablet users pay £26 per month.
For a limited period, EE is offering double data allowances on Shared 4G Plans when subscribers sign up between July 17th and September 30th
EE claims that a typical family of four could save £38 per month with its Shared 4G plans, or over £450 per year.
