A new photo purporting to show Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 6 has been leaked on Chinese micro–blogging site Weibo.
Clearly featuring a new–look handset with a protruding camera lens and iPad mini–style design, the image is said to have been taken at Foxconn’s factory in China.
This isn’t the first leaked photo we’ve seen of the iPhone 6, but it is the first one to have come directly from the production line, if it does indeed prove to be accurate.
Previously leaked images have shown a much thinner handset, which looks more like the current iPod touch than any other Apple product.

iPhone 5S stock shortages ease on UK networks

Calm breaks out in the iPhone market.

Supply of the iPhone 5S is finally catching up with demand, spelling an end to mammoth delays that have blighted the phone’s release thus far.
Until recently, online orders placed with UK carriers were subject to wait times of up to four weeks. That applied irrespective of the colour or storage variant you were after.

However, signs are now abroad that the situation has eased. Just in time for this year's seasonal stampede.
Cursory visits to O2 and EE's sites pledge that orders processed today will be delivered within two working days. That goes for every colourway. Even the massively in-demand gold model.
Meanwhile, Vodafone promises delivery dates of between one to two weeks for grey and silver models. Alas, if you want the gold handset, you’re still looking at a wait of two-four weeks.

iPad air to defy predictions and outsell iPad mini 2 by 2 to 1, survey reveals

Top-end tablet is most in-demand.

Analysts who forecast the iPad mini 2 would trounce the refreshed version of the top-end Apple slate in the sales stakes were wide of the mark, a survey suggest.
The second-gen iPad and the fifth-gen full-size tablet, now rebranded as the iPad air, debuted last week at an uncommonly busy launch event down at Yerba Buena.
In the week before the showcase, smartphone-industry sages from the likes of RBC Capital Markets predicted that the iPad mini 2’s Retina Display and keen price point would see it outsell its more established stablemate by a margin of two to one.
Not so, it seems. At least not if a uSwitch Tech poll can be believed.
Of the 538 customers asked which of the slates they intended to buy, 65.75% (or almost two thirds) named the iPad air. That’s an almost exact reversal of what analysts told us in the run-up to their grand unveiling.

iPhone sales soar, but Apple profits drop

iPhone still on top.

Apple sold a massive 33.8 million iPhones in the three months from July to September, smashing its previous record for the quarter.
The number represents a substantial jump from the tech giant's sales of 26.9 million in the same period last year and 31.2 million handsets shifted from April to June this year.
That headline number covers the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, which accounted for nine million sales in their opening weekend alone.
However, both devices only launched in the last week of the reported period, suggesting iPhone 5 sales remained strong over the summer.
Despite these impressive results, Apple profits slipped to $7.5 billion, down from $8.2 billion in the same quarter in 2012.

iPhone 5 and 4S to be discontinued to make way for iPhone 5S and iPhone 6?

Current-gen model to go the way of all flesh?

The iPhone 5 may not be long for this world, it has emerged, amid speculation that the handset could be phased out when new models land later this year.
According to Korean site ET News, whose scoop was brought to the western world by MacRumors, the current-generation iPhone, plus the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, are being dropped to make way for the new standard iPhone and the low-cost model.

Apple’s move is partly aimed at allowing it to phase out its trad iPhone connector and ensure the newer standard it adopted last year is used across its smartphone range.
The iPhone 5 will apparently be joining the older Apple kits in the phone graveyard because the touchscreen it uses is not “suitable for low-volume production", making the handset unviable as a mid-range or low-cost option.

iPhone 6 could feature Liquidmetal exterior

Changes could be afoot when it comes to the iPhone’s build quality, it has emerged, amid signs that Apple could ditch the glass and aluminium construction of the current-gen model for Liquidmetal.
Rumours that Liquidmetal would figure in a future iPhone have been circulating since April last year. The alloy is favoured by Apple because it is less scratch-prone than glass but still offers the same silky smooth surfaces.

However, speculation that a LiquidMetal iPhone is an idea whose time may have come got fresh legs today after a site discovered a patent awarded to Crucible Intellectual Property. This is the inauspicious-sounding company at the heart of Apple’s licensing deal with LiquidMetal Technologies.
The patent details a fresh approach to production, which has until now been restricted to SIM ejector tools. This is due to unspecified manufacturing challenges, of the sort that LiquidMetal inventor Dr Atakan Peker outlined last year.
How viable the new method is for mass production of devices isn’t clear. But while it’s unlikely that the next iPhone will debut the technology, there’s a very good chance that Apple will feature LiquidMetal for iPhones some time in the future.
Under the terms of its agreement with LiquidMetal Technologies, which was signed in 2010, Apple has exclusive rights to use the technology.

iPhone 5S: champagne and graphite models star in new videos

Apple’s forthcoming champagne and graphite iPhones have starred in a pair of new videos, as their planned September 10th launch date edges ever closer.
The champagne iPhone 5S, filmed by the guys at TLD, highlights the differences with the current iPhone 5. Aside from the colour options, the video also looks at the internal changes, with greater space for the battery, suggesting Apple might have at last cracked its power woes.
In a separate video, the graphite iPhone 5S is shown alongside the current black and white editions of the iPhone 5. But with initial iPhone 5 prototypes having come in this colour, it’s been suggested in some quarters that this version may not go on sale later next month.

iPhone 5C: New manual and package images leaked

One week to go.

Just eight days before Tim Cook is due to reveal the iPhone 5C, new images purporting to show the device’s packaging and manual have appeared online.
The most intriguing is a snap of the red version of the budget handset. The packaging is consistent with previously leaked pics of the phone, with the same design and a mocked up screen of iOS 7.
Users on Chinese site Weibo have also been treated to shots of the iPhone 5C’s one card manual, as well as a photo of the classic Apple SIM ejection tool bundled with the blower.

iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S dropping Sept 20th, network leak reveals

Carrier cancels holiday, sparks release-date chatter.

Speculation that the next-generation iPhone and its cheaper stablemate will go on sale on September 20th got a good deal more credible today, amid rumours that one of the largest US networks has cancelled holiday for staff for the period.
Talk of the handsets tipping up on the 20th has been abroad for months now. The date was initially mooted after some keen-minded deduction on the part of the editor of the International Business Times, who based his prediction on Apple’s previous form.
His claim got fresh legs over the weekend when mysterious sources told TmoNews that T-Mobile employees over The Pond have been barred from taking holiday between September 20th and 22nd. This is so that the carrier is able to cope with the huge swell in demand that marks the release of new Apple smartphones.
AT&T is also reported to have issued a blanket ban on holidays over that weekend. However, seemingly anticipating even greater demand than its rival, T-Mo’s competitor is forbidding staff from taking holidays for all remaining days in September too.
Demand for the low-cost iPhone 5C, which features a money-saving plastic shell, is expected to be buoyed by a price point of around £250. This will arguably make the iPhone a viable pay as you go handset for the first time ever.

iPhone 5C working model crops up on video

First time we’ve seen iOS 7 and plastic shell in tandem.

With shells in multiple colours, buttons, screens and mock-up devices appearing online in recent months, the iPhone 5C could well be Apple’s most-leaked phone ever. But there’s been no sign of a working model. Until now, that is.
A lo-fi, grainy clip has surfaced on Chinese tech site C Technology showing the phone fully assembled, running the forthcoming iOS 7 version of Apple’s operating system and working well enough to enable the user to conduct a web search.
Judging by the footage, the iPhone 5C and its proprietary Safari browser zip along at a fair old lick for what’s being touted as a cheap phone, which could corroborate claims that the handset will offer 4G support.
Some tech scribes suggested the low-cost iPhone might be restricted to last-gen 3G networks, helping to differentiate it from the top-end iPhone 5S.
However, before you get too excited it’s worth noting that the clip is pretty low-grade, making it hard to tell what we’re seeing.
And given that the user doesn’t see fit to show us the tell-tale product info that Apple secretes at the rear of phones, there’s even more reason to remain somewhat incredulous that we’re looking at the real deal.

The plastic cover of the low-cost iPhone 5C is a lot more robust than some snatched spyshots might suggest, a leaked video of the handset reveals.
Much-leaked online in recent weeks, the polycarbonate shell for Apple’s budget handset has been derided in some quarters as cheap and flimsy-looking. Even less kind comments compared the back cover to something tatty you might find a street market.
However, a clip doing the rounds online, which comes to us from Chinese site Apple Daily, proves that appearances can be deceptive.

iPhone 5S gold edition shell snapped alongside iPhone 5, design unchanged

‘Old’ meet ‘gold’.

Photos of the back plate for the next-gen iPhone in gold have cropped up online alongside the current edition, giving us a glimpse at how the fresh colourway will look.
Snapped alongside black and white models of the iPhone 5, the photo suggest that rather than the gaudy gold colourway of some tech-scribes’ imaginations, the handset will feature a subtler shade, probably best described as ‘champagne’.
And there’s scant sign of radical changes elsewhere too. As earlier leaks have shown, the new photos indicate that the placement and design of the iPhone 5S’s fixtures and fittings (SIM try, buttons, volume rocker) will remain unchanged.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced claiming that the golden edition of the iPhone 5S could come in a super-deluxe 128GB edition and will be aimed principally at the bling-fancying middle-classes in China.

Exclusive: iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C parts revealed in new leaked photos

Fourth iPhone 5S colour spied.

New images of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, shared with uSwitch Tech, appear to show a fourth iPhone 5S colour option, as well as a string of new angles of both of Apple’s forthcoming handsets.
The graphite grey iPhone 5S appears alongside the now seemingly nailed-on 'champagne gold' edition of the device. The images suggest it’ll have a slate-coloured central panel, with black panelling along the top and bottom.
Once again, the gold iPhone 5S looks as if it won’t come in a gaudy bullion-colour, but rather a more mute champagne tone.
Other images, from insiders close to Apple’s supply chain, show the iPhone 5C’s plastic shell in a rather natty red/orange colour.
Both the budget iPhone 5C and top-end iPhone 5S are due to be launched on September 10th, with a number of sources close to Apple confirming that date for a special event. The phones will then go on sale on September 20th, according to reports last week.
As those dates near, expect to see plenty more snapshots of the devices leaking out across the web.

The screen for the next iPhone has posed for some new pictures for uSwitch Tech, alongside packaging suggesting predictions that the handset will be called the 'iPhone 5S' or 'iPhone 6' could be wide of the mark.
Sourced from the Apple supply chain by uSwitch and international man of mystery and all-round Apple apostle Sonny Dickson, the snaps show the phone’s display in white.
As confirmed before, the four-inch screen comes in at the same dimensions as that of the iPhone 5, with the near-identical positioning of buttons and other fixtures and fittings indicating that it’s business as usual when it comes to the phone’s design.
In fact, the only really notable difference is that there’s a longer ribbon cable. So far, so familiar, then. And perfectly in tune with rumours that the phone’s improvements will be restricted to its internals.
However, where there is a soupcon of intrigue is the label on the box that contained the display.

iPhone 6 render imagines plastic concept, looks surprisingly brilliant

Plastic kit need not be cheap looking, shows latest illustration.

Apple may be all about premium materials nowadays, but one designer is out to prove a plastic iPhone can look just as impressive as those fashioned from metal.
Produced by Ran Avni and spotted by Cult of Mac, the render illustrates what Apple’s next-generation iPhone could look like if it were made of plastic rather than aluminium and glass like the iPhone 5.

The result is an impressive concept that's proof that despite the perceived inferiority of plastic, it isn’t at odds with the trademark design ethos that’s made Apple’s smartphones so popular around the world.
At first glimpse, Ravni’s handset looks largely similar to the iPhone 5, but at the back it boasts smoother, curvier edges that immediately bring the iPad mini to mind.
While we don’t think that Apple would, or even should, make its flagship kit out of plastic, it certainly wouldn’t be a wrong choice for the more affordable version that’s been a staple of the rumour-mill for some time now.
Unofficially dubbed the iPhone mini, a cheaper Apple smartphone is expected to retain the four-inch display of the iPhone 5, but recycle other parts from older models, such as an A5 processor from the iPhone 4S and an eight-megapixel camera.
Apple is widely tipped to unveil a less costly iPhone alongside its flagship model this year – possibly in summer or autumn.

Apple is plotting a new slow-motion camera feature for its iPhone 5S, dubbed ‘Mogul’, rumours suggest.
The inside information has been sniffed out by the Cupertino fanatics at 9to5mac.
Word is that the new feature will allow users to record video at 120 frames per second, offering insanely detailed footage and bolstering the iPhone’s already impressive camera and video-shooting options.
References to the so-called ‘Mogul’ function have been found by sleuth-like developers searching through iOS 7’s code.
It’s likely Apple will use the ‘Mogul’ name to market the function as a media- creation tool, according to 9to5mac.
Samsung and Android fans are likely to point out that the Korean giant’s Galaxy S4 already has this slow-motion functionality.
But Apple is unlikely to be deterred by such fripperies. When it launched its FaceTime feature, the tech giant essentially made out it had invented video calling, despite Skype’s huge popularity.
The iPhone 5S is expected to launch in autumn, alongside a cheaper, plastic model of Tim Cook and co’s best-selling handset.

With the exception of an official press event in Cupertino, few things signify the impending arrival of a new iPhone more vividly than reports that Apple’s manufacturing partners are ramping up staff numbers.
So this morning’s news that Foxconn is recruiting new staff should serve as due notice to would-be buyers that the much rumoured smartphone is now just a matter of months from its big reveal. And double as a warning to anyone thinking of buying the current model that they might want to hold off for a few months.
According to China Business News, the company is looking to recruit assembly line workers for its plant in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, and is about to start mass production of the next iPhone, which looks likely to be called the ‘iPhone 5S’ or ‘iPhone 6’.
It’s thought that Apple will drop its next smartphone contender in September. This will would tally with previous iPhone production cycles, in which manufacturing starts between two to three months ahead of its debut.

September may also see the arrival of time-honoured tech-site trope, the low-cost iPhone. This is reputed to feature a plastic shell in place of the premium construction of the standard iPhone and recycle parts from earlier models to keep costs down.
Also incoming that month, it seems, is the iPad 5 in what would be an unprecedented Q3 flurry of activity for the gadget-maker.

Even better than the real thing?

A frankly gorgeous rendering of the iPhone 6 is doing the rounds online today, raising the stakes for the real deal when it lands later this year.
Worked up by Phillip Ink and German site iPhone 6 de, the ‘what-if’ pictures depict a handset that incorporates a larger 4.5-inch edge-to-edge, bezel-free screen. That compares to the four-inch display that Apple's phone sports right now.

An all-new, all-lovely sleek design that’s slimmer and lighter than the current gen model is also very much in evidence, as are sky blue, navy blue red, black and green colour options.
In response to the savage criticism that the iOS 7 operating system came in for in some quarters, Ink has also rethought the look of the software that will power the phone.
So where Jonathan Ive’s official iOS 7 Photo icon featured what looked like a spyrograph drawing, the reimagined one is garnished with a cartoony panoramic scene of a mountain range.
That’s just the kind of cutesy touch that evidence suggests was anathema to the arch adherent of minimalism and skeuomorphism sceptic and that he purged from the platform.

Meanwhile, Game Centre’s icon goes from a venn diagram that doesn't seem to denote very much at all to something approximate to its previous look, with four quadrants each containing an object associated with different genres of games.
But while the chess piece, baseball bat and rocket ship make a reappearance in said quadrants, the target that was there previously has been replaced by dice, presumably to indicate that gambling games are part of Game Centre.
Apple is thought likely to showcase the real iPhone 6 in September. But unlike this reimaging of the handset, the next-gen phone is expected to stick fairly closely to the current model.
