New Moto G second-generation 4G: Five things you need to know
Cheap-as-chips smartphone gets a speed boost.
The Moto G is one of our favourite budget handsets.
When it first launched back in 2013, it set a new standard for affordable smartphones and prompted other manufacturers to get their acts together.
The second-generation model arrived in September last year, and now there's finally the option of a 4G edition. Tempted? Here's all you need to know.
1 It has 4G
4G means faster browsing, judder-free streaming and quicker access to your emails and social networks.
According to Ofcom, UK 4G speeds are more than twice as fast as 3G, hitting an average of 15.1Mbps.
In comparison, 3G is crawling along at an average of 6.1Mbps.
4G was previously the preserve of high-end handsets, but it's becoming more common on entry-level blowers like the Moto G.
Other budget 4G handsets include the Nokia Lumia 630, and EE Kestrel.
2 It's only £10 more than the non-4G model
Because of the faster speeds, 4G must come with a hefty price tag, right? Wrong.
The Moto G 4G with LTE is just £159 – that's only £10 more than the standard 3G model. Who wouldn't pay a tenner for twice the internet speed?
That price is SIM-free.
The handset isn't currently available on pay monthly tariffs, but keep your eyes peeled. Its predecessor can be had for free on contracts costing just £11 a month.
While 4G contracts are pricier than 3G, it could still pop up as a bargain.
3 It's not the cheapest 4G option around
Amazingly, despite its low price, it's not the most affordable 4G smartphone in town.
It's been outdone by its stablemate, the new Motorola Moto E.
This packs a 4.5-inch screen, 4G LTE networking and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, all in a package that costs just £110. Bargain.
Even cheaper, the EE Kestrel costs just £99. Though obviously it makes some compromises.
4 It has a big screen
While it might not be the cheapest, the New Moto G 4G with LTE is one of the best 4G bargains around.
It's big, with a 5-inch screen that has a resolution of 720x1,280 pixels (most phones around this price have 4-inch screens, or even smaller).
It packs 8GB of storage. And it has an eight-megapixel rear camera and two-megapixel front-facer.
The 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip might not be the fastest around, but it more than does the job, especially partnered with 1GB of RAM.
And for this price, we're not arguing.
5 It's on sale next week
According to Motorola, the handset hits the shops on the week commencing March 16th.
You'll find it at Tesco, Carphone Warehouse, Amazon, Argos, Sainsbury's and Asda.
