iPhone 6: 5.5” and 4.7” models will launch together, says analyst

Rumours that Apple could unveil the two versions of the iPhone 6 at separate launch events have been dismissed by a high-profile industry analyst, after probing accessory-makers in China.
Tech-site reports had suggested that battery and screen-manufacturing problems with the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 meant that it may not tip up until much later than the 4.7-inch model.
However, anyone hoping to get their hands on the iPhone phablet sooner rather than later got something of a fillip last week when it was claimed that Apple had discovered a way of making a battery thin and durable enough for the larger phone.

The Cupertino giant was also reported to have enlisted a secondary supplier to help cope with demand.
Today, there’s more good news for would-be owners of the 5.5-inch kit after Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Brian White also threw his weight behind a simultaneous debut for the iPhone 6 variants.
He told BGR: “During our China/Taiwan Tech Tour in April, we met with a small number of accessory makers that had started initial production of accessories for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 but not the 5.5-inch version, but today’s research highlights a much broader ramp of the 4.7-inch version.”

White added: “Also at Computex, we noticed that a few vendors had already started work on accessories for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 and the pieces were available at the show.
“Given the lack of data points in recent months around progress with the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 and growing scepticism in the media around a 2014 launch, we view this as a positive development.
“Based on today’s research, we believe the timing of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 launch appears to be in sync with our expectation around the unveiling (i.e., September) of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6.”
How much store to set by his prediction in the light of White’s mixed track record is a moot point. But he’s been very, very right about these things before (CF: he was the first to call coloured iPhones as part of Apple’s plans), so we’d suggest you keep a close eye on his forecasts as the launch date approaches.
