IFA 2013: Five key gadgets you should be excited for

We list five mouthwatering kits you should be looking forward to this year's tech expo in Berlin.

Berlin’s annual gadget bash, IFA, is just over a week away. And while trade shows have become less of a draw in recent years, with the biggest players preferring to reveal products at their own specially organised events, this year the German capital is set to see some pretty major launches.
Some of late 2013’s key phones, tablets and, yes, smart watches, are going to be unveiled. Here are five key products you need to know about.
Samsung Galaxy Gear
Samsung has done a purposefully poor job of keeping a lid on leaks about its forthcoming Galaxy Gear smart watch. Details of the iWatch rival have been leaked extensively over the summer, even if spy shots have so far proved hard to come by.

The timepiece is expected to rock a 2.5-inch flexible touchscreen display, use the same eye-tracking tech as the Galaxy S4 and pack in a string of fitness-focused features. Expect this to be the most talked about product at the show.

Of course, Samsung will also be wanting to tout a new device to work with the Galaxy Gear. And that’s where the Galaxy Note 3 comes in. Hyped all year, this new phablet is believed to pack a 5.7-inch Full HD display, Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3: new components leaked

Phablet fantastic.

Gossip about Samsung’s forthcoming Galaxy Note 3 has gone quiet in the past couple of weeks. But the all-new phablet has burst back into the headlines this morning, after a screen component was snapped by mobile leakster Sonny Dickson.

Dickson says he snagged the images from ‘a trusted source in China’. They appear to show a brushed metal design, with the usual Samsung branding and home button placed at the bottom of the device.
The images add little to what we already know about the spec sheet. The screen is believed to measure 5.7-inches. However, they do clearly suggest the bezel has been shaved down, with other reports claiming it’ll come in at just 2.2mm.
Other Galaxy Note 3 features are believed to include a 13 megapixel snapper and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Steve Wozniak dismisses Apple critics

Don’t expect greatness every year, says co-founder.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has said the company’s critics have got to understand that the company can’t release revolutionary kit year after year.
In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC, Wozniak said, “Everybody says, ‘oh my gosh, two years have passed and we need something really new and great from Apple’.” Well yeah, great advances for mankind don't happen every year.”
Launching a staunch defence of Tim Cook’s tenure as Apple CEO, Wozniak said the current boss was hand-picked for the role by his predecessor. “Steve Jobs had very strong feelings about what makes a company great, what makes products great. He more-or-less chose Tim Cook to be in that role, in that position.”
Wozniak also said he welcomed the challenge from Samsung, saying the Korean giant was able to lead thanks to its penetration in markets where Apple had no presence until just a few years ago.
He also suggested that Steve Ballmer’s time at Microsoft had not gone as well as Bill Gates’s, saying the Big M was losing its value and that it was resting on its laurels.

First impressions

Nokia’s all-new budget blower is a colossus. Measuring in at 4.7-inches and with the look and feel of a top-end smartphone, it doesn’t have the air of a budget device. It blasts into life quickly and feels nippy when flicking through Windows Phone’s various native apps, as well as the various Nokia add-ons. It’s hard to believe that this is a sub-£200 handset.

Design

Much like other Nokia Lumia phones, the 625 is a plastic device with real heft. That’s a plus point, as it feels as if it can withstand any nasty drops and scrapes. Its size is comparable to Google’s Nexus 4, while its curved rear design means its sits comfortably in the hand.

The buttons along the right hand side of the handset aren’t obtrusive, while our white model didn’t appear to pick up any nasty fingerprints on its rear shell. There aren’t many cheap smartphones that can match the Lumia 625 in the design department.

Samsung Galaxy Gear: render imagines smartwatch based on leaked patent

Looks the goods.

A 3D designer has given us some insight into how the Samsung Galaxy Gear might look, after working up a ‘what-if’ render based on a leaked Samsung patent for a smartwatch.
Created for the discount site Voucher Codes Pro, the designers’ handsome imagining of the Gear includes a flexible screen of the sort that Samsung is known to have been investigating for some time.

The clasp of the tech giant’s foray into wearable tech features 'home' and 'back' buttons of the kind that grace every Android smartphone.
How much this will look like this finished article is anyone’s guess. But we know we’re fans of this particular render. And it also looks like we won’t have too much longer to find out how close the site has come to the real thing.
Samsung is now expected to drop the Galaxy Gear in early September at the same press event at Berlin’s IFA trade show that will also mark the launch of the Galaxy Note 3.

Exclusive: iPhone 5S / iPhone 6 display snapped again, delivery box hints at iPhone 5G name

More of the same? Yes and no.

The screen for the next iPhone has posed for some new pictures for uSwitch Tech, alongside packaging suggesting predictions that the handset will be called the 'iPhone 5S' or 'iPhone 6' could be wide of the mark.
Sourced from the Apple supply chain by uSwitch and international man of mystery and all-round Apple apostle Sonny Dickson, the snaps show the phone’s display in white.
As confirmed before, the four-inch screen comes in at the same dimensions as that of the iPhone 5, with the near-identical positioning of buttons and other fixtures and fittings indicating that it’s business as usual when it comes to the phone’s design.
In fact, the only really notable difference is that there’s a longer ribbon cable. So far, so familiar, then. And perfectly in tune with rumours that the phone’s improvements will be restricted to its internals.
However, where there is a soupcon of intrigue is the label on the box that contained the display.

Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 primed for Android 4.3

Updates incoming.

Samsung’s 2012 flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S3 and Note 2, are both set to make the jump directly to Android 4.3, bypassing Android 4.2 in the process.
The news comes via Deutsche Telekom, with a rep on its customer forum telling users that the Galaxy S3 would be making the move to Google’s latest version of Android.

Recent rumours have also suggested that the Note 2, which is set to be superseded by the Note 3 next month, will also be getting the same treatment.
The Galaxy S3 currently uses Android version 4.1.2. While the update won’t revolutionise the device, it will keep hardcore Google fanatics happy.
Samsung appears to be getting better at updating its older devices to newer software, with the Galaxy S2 also getting Android Jelly Bean.
This is in contrast to rival manufacturers, including HTC, which have struggled to roll out new versions of Google’s OS.

LG G2 gets official

Finally.

LG has finally revealed its new flagship G2 smartphone. The device was launched at a special event in New York, with the Korean giant claiming its latest effort ushers in ‘a new perspective in smartphone design’.
That’s a rather bold statement, but the G2 is certainly a little different from its key Android rivals, including Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and HTC’s One.

For a start, the volume and power controls are on the back of the device, beneath the phone’s camera. By shifting those buttons, LG says the G2 offers a better screen experience than its competitors.
The 5.2-inch Full HD display stretches across the entire device, with the bezel measuring just 0.1mm. As well as that unique design, LG has also managed to cram in Graphic RAM tech, which it says drops the screen’s energy use by 26%, pushing up battery life by around 10%.
The handset is also the first to pack in 24 bit/192Hz Hi-Fi, making it a must for hardcore audiophiles too.
The G2 also includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM and Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2.
Three has confirmed that it will be stocking the LG G2 ‘soon’.

LG Optimus 4X HD, Vu and 3D Max announced at Mobile World Congress

Optimus super-trio make official debut.

LG has made a sizable splash at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), showcasing three new major additions to its Optimus line of smartphones.
The South Korean electronics maker took full advantage of rival Samsung’s absence from the high-profile event by announcing its first ever quad core smartphone, the Optimus 4X HD, the supersized Optimus Vu and a sequel to the Optimus 3D.
Billed as sporting the world’s only 4-Plus-1 quad core processor by Nvidia, the 4X packs a fifth ‘battery-saver’ core that handles less resource hungry tasks and is a bona fide media powerhouse thanks to a 12-core graphics processing unit.
This is augmented by a capacious 4.7-inch IPS display with 720p HD resolution, an eight-megapixel camera with full HD recording and 16GB of internal storage. And in news that will please more than a few, Android Ice Cream Sandwich is installed out of the box. Impressively, all of this is rolled into a slick 8.9mm thick shell that LG describes as a ‘prism-edged-design’.
Moving on and we have the Optimus Vu. This is home to a five-inch backlit LCD screen with a 1024x768 resolution, 1.5GHz dual core processor with 1GB of RAM, an eight-megapixel camera with LED flash and 32GB of on board memory. There’s NFC support, too, for making contactless payments.
Although it launches with Android Gingerbread, LG has promised that an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich is definitely in the pipeline.
Lastly, we come to the Optimus 3D Max. Like its predecessor, the Optimus 3D, this boasts a glasses-free 3D display, measuring 4.3 inches, a five-megapixel camera with 3D-snapping/recording capabilities and 8GB of internal memory.
Keeping things ticking over is 1.2GHz dual core processor. Plus there’s support for DLNA support with 3D streaming and NFC to cap things off.
Alas, Android Gingerbread is present here, too. However, Ice Cream Sandwich will be rolled out after launch.
No exact release or pricing details have been confirmed yet, but we should get those soon once MWC comes to an end. So stay tuned.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich rollout is go for HTC Evo 3D

HTC has begun rolling out Android 4.0, A.K.A Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) for the HTC Evo 3D, giving the year-old smartphone a fresh lease of life.
The phone-manufacturer is making the update, which brings some smart new features to the handset, available initially to owners in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

As it stands, however, ICS is only up for grabs if you've got an unlocked Evo 3D. Owners of network-branded models will have to wait until it passes through testing with individual carriers. And as experience tells us, that could take months.
Features it adds to the handset aren’t yet confirmed. But potential additions take in the rather specious Face Unlock security feature that uses the front-facing camera to scan would-be users’ faces and will only become unlocked for the owner. Or at least, that's the theory.
Also likely to make the transition to the Evo 3D are a range of user interface tweaks and enhanced multi-tasking.
